How to Build a CMU Wall
Concrete Masonry Unit (CMU) walls are a durable, cost-effective, and versatile project. Whether you're building a retaining wall, a foundation, or a freestanding structure, understanding the proper steps involved in the project is key to ensuring structural integrity and longevity. This step-by-step guide will walk you through the process of building a CMU wall (from planning and site preparation to laying blocks and finishing). giving you the confidence and know-how to tackle your project like a pro. Let's get started!
STEP 1: Demolition
Cut and break down the old structure you plan on replacing.
Properly dispose of the scrap concrete waste.
AMC Tip!: (If there’s a concrete mixing plant near you, try calling and asking them if they recycle concrete waste!)
STEP 2: Prepare The Trench
Prepare a trench in the ground that is clear of any and all debris.
The trench must meet the specs of the new concrete footing
(The measurements are 2’ Feet wide and 18” Inches deep)
AMC Tip!: (While this trench is only showing a certain distance, you can extend it further out to the sides if you wish and have the sufficient concrete)
STEP 3: Set Down and Tie Rebar
Set and bind steel rebar in place
Each bar should be around 16” (Inches) apart and centered along the trench
STEP 4: Pour The Footing
Pour concrete into the trench up the desired height (Be careful not to overfill!).
In this case we’ll fill it up 18 inches to create our footing.
STEP 5: Lay Mortar and Cinderblocks
With the steel rebar to support them, you can now start laying down your cinderblocks with mortar to hold them together.
AMC Tip!: (Make sure all the cinderblocks are plum and leveled with an even layer of mortar)
((These cinderblocks are standard CMU measurements, 7 5/8ths x 15 5/8ths x 7 5/8ths.))
STEP 5 (Cont.): Layer More Cinderblocks
Continue to add more layers of blocks and mortar until you reach the desired height of your wall!
AMC Tip!: (Your wall can be any height you desire, just be careful not to violate any rules where you live!)
Voila! Congratulations!
You've just completed your very own cinderblock wall. Built brick by brick, with your own hands! Whether it’s for your garden, a boundary, or part of some bigger project, you should be proud of the time, effort, and precision you put into building something solid and long-lasting.
Take a breath, step back, and take a moment to admire the nice wall you just built.
! A Quick Word Before YOu Start !
We hope this DIY guide helps you tackle your next project with confidence. However, it is very important to know where DIY ends and when it's best to bring in a professional.
Please, do keep in mind:
Specialized Equipment Could Be Impractical: Many advanced concrete techniques require professional-grade tools and machinery that are quite expensive to rent, even more expensive to buy, and frankly difficult to operate without the proper training. Attempting any advanced construction without the right equipment could lead to subpar results or some costly mistakes.
Safety Always Comes First: More advanced concrete work can involve heavy materials, chemicals, and high-risk tools. Our team is trained to follow strict safety protocols for this exact reason. Without proper experience, attempting techniques like these for your projects can put both your health and property at a serious risk.
Some Work Is Best Left To Professionals: Complex pours, structural elements, and specialty finishes often require techniques, knowledge and experience. A professional ensures that the job is done safely, up to code, and it's built to last.
If your project involves anything beyond the basics, we strongly recommend consulting with our team via the link below. You’ll save time, avoid costly mistakes, and get results that you can truly rely on!
